Resist Festival: Original Idea by Dr Lisa Mckenzie

September 2016

Dr Lisa McKenzie, Research Fellow and organiser of the Festival said: “The Resist Festival aims to turn LSE inside out and open this creative and interesting place in the heart of London to those who are often locked out by institutionalised inequalities. To question, to critique and to resist power is part of our human rights, and important to our democracy, without resistance there is only totalitarianism.”
As part of the Resist Festival, the multimedia collective, Acrylick, will stage a provocative collage of its flamboyant political fable Jagged Edge. This imagines borders, housing and resistance in East London’s future and is built from interviews with current residents.
Acclaimed poets Bridge Minamore and Tim Wells, along with Mic Righteous, Thee Deadtime Philharmonic and DJ Jay King will take part in a gig night – Sounds of Resistance – where they will celebrate how themes of resistance are explored through music and performance.
The Paper Birds Theatre Company will perform ‘Mobile to Resist’ – an intimate theatre show performed for nine people at a time in a caravan. The production explores our sense of home, belonging, aspiration, and the realities of social mobility.

Poets, Tim Wells and Bridget Minamore perform at Resist on Thursday evening with Thee Deadtime Philamonics monday and Tuesday Vivienne Westwood to talk at LSE Resist Festival

Two free talks by fashion designer and activist Vivienne Westwood will form the centrepieces of a three day festival on the theme of resistance at LSE.

Vivienne will discuss power and money and how propaganda can be resisted through critical thinking, the collaboration of intellectuals and activists, and culture not consumption.

‘The Rotten Financial System is the Enemy. We are the Opposition. Part 1’will take place on Monday 26 September and must be registered for. Part 2 will take place on Wednesday 28 September and admittance will be on a first come first served basis.

Vivienne Westwood said: “I have always used my fashion to talk about politics, by which I mean human rights and lately climate change. Everything is connected: the rotten global financial system known as neoliberalism (Rot $) is the cause of poverty and climate change; it feeds on consumption. Globalization means 1 million control 7 billion. There is no opposition.

“Unite! We are discussing now. We will be doing so at the Resist Festival. Britain is a good place to start. We are the solution. The answer is in the practice. If you think about the world, join us – it’s open to all”

Resist: Festival of Ideas and Actions is open to the public and students and will actively involve community groups. It will explore how the theme of resistance has been interpreted and understood within academic research, the arts, grassroots activism campaigns, student debate and mainstream politics.

Young Carers at Resist

September 2016

There are 700,000 young carers in the UK. In the current era of austerity, young carers are hidden from public view and their stories are being ignored. Carers of Barking & Dagenham visit the LSE to showcase a video about life as a young carer.
